Lake Hartwell is one of the largest (56,000 acres) and most popular public recreation lakes in southeast Georgia's Savannah area. The lake is a reservoir built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the late 1950s to provide water, power, fish and wildlife protection and recreation for the public. Fish that are in the lake include catfish, striper, bass and crappies.
